It's Official! Barbadians and Guyanese Can Now Travel Using Their National ID Cards

A historic moment for Caribbean travel has officially arrived.
July 1, 2026, marked a milestone in regional mobility as Barbados and Guyana implemented their passport-free travel arrangement.
Eligible citizens of both countries can now travel directly between the two nations using approved national identification cards.
The initiative was officially demonstrated through a Caribbean Airlines flight from Guyana to Barbados, highlighting the practical implementation of the new travel arrangement.
What Do Travellers Need to Know?
Although the initiative is described as passport-free travel, there are important conditions.
1. Your identification card must qualify.
Travellers must hold an approved national identification card that complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
2. Children may have different requirements.
Barbadian children under 16 must continue to travel using their passports.
3. Carrying a passport is still advisable.
Immigration officials have recommended that travellers carry their passports where possible, particularly in case an aircraft is diverted to a country that does not recognise the new arrangement.
4. Immigration procedures still apply.
Travellers must continue to comply with applicable entry requirements, including completion of the relevant online Embarkation/Disembarkation forms.
Does Passport-Free Travel Mean Freedom to Live and Work?
This is an important distinction.
The ability to travel using a national ID card should not be confused with an unrestricted right to reside or work.
Immigration status, employment authorisation and residency rights must still be considered separately under the applicable laws and regional arrangements.
What's Next for Caribbean Travel?
The successful launch of this initiative may encourage other CARICOM Member States to consider similar arrangements.
For now, Barbados and Guyana have demonstrated that regional mobility can be simplified through cooperation and technology.
At BorderPass Barbados, we believe that understanding your travel rights is just as important as enjoying them.
Planning a move to Barbados?
Whether you are considering employment, business, family reunification or long-term residency, understanding the appropriate immigration pathway is essential.
