In a decisive national address, Prime Minister Mia Mottley emphasized that Barbados will not commodify its citizenship. Addressing the nation on Sunday, she stated, “Let me be extremely blunt. Barbados will not sell citizenship. We will not sell citizenship.”
This statement comes as the government prepares to modernise its immigration and nationality laws through the Immigration Bill 2025 and the Citizenship Bill 2025, which are currently under parliamentary review. These reforms aim to create a fairer and more transparent system, extending citizenship rights to Barbadian descendants up to great-grandchildren, offering preferential treatment to CARICOM nationals, and providing a humane path to permanent residence for others, including spouses of Barbadians.
What Does This Mean for You?
While Barbados is not offering citizenship through investment schemes, there are still legitimate pathways for individuals interested in relocating:
Permanent Residency: Individuals can apply for permanent residency through various channels, including employment, investment, or familial connections.
Naturalisation: After residing in Barbados for a specified period, individuals may apply for citizenship through naturalization, provided they meet the necessary criteria.
